Family snorkeling in clear shallow water at a Bali reef, suitable for children and beginner divers

Diving Bali with Kids: What Families Need to Know

Planning a family holiday in Bali and wondering whether diving Bali with kids is actually possible? The short answer is yes, and with the right approach it can be one of the most memorable experiences your family shares together. Bali's calm, warm, and visually rich dive sites make it unusually well-suited to younger travellers, as long as you match each activity to the right age group and certification level.

What Age Can Children Participate in Bali's Dive Activities?

PADI sets clear minimum age guidelines that any reputable dive centre will follow. Children aged eight and older can join a Try Dive, which introduces them to breathing underwater in a supervised, confined-water setting with no certification required. From age ten, children can begin the PADI Open Water Course and earn a Junior Open Water certification, allowing them to dive to 12 metres alongside a certified adult. Full Open Water certification, with an 18-metre limit, becomes available at age 15.

For children who are not yet ready to dive, or for parents who prefer to stay closer to the surface, snorkeling is an excellent alternative. Bali's reef systems are often shallow and clear enough that a snorkeler can see nearly as much as a diver, and sites like Jemeluk Bay in Amed and the Blue Lagoon in Padangbai are particularly calm and accessible for younger swimmers.

The Best Dive Sites for Families in Bali

Not every dive site in Bali is suitable for children or beginner-level divers. Strong currents, deep water, and exposed ocean conditions require experience and physical maturity. When planning a family trip, prioritise sites known for gentle conditions and high marine life density at shallower depths.

  • Padangbai – Blue Lagoon: Protected bay, minimal current, excellent visibility, and colourful reef fish at beginner-friendly depths. One of the most family-appropriate sites in Bali. Learn more about Padangbai.
  • Amed – Jemeluk Bay: Easy entry, calm water, and a sloping reef packed with marine life. Ideal for first dives and junior divers alike.
  • Sanur: A calm channel used regularly for training dives. The relaxed conditions make it a sensible first open-water experience for younger participants.

Sites such as Blue Corner at Nusa Penida or the deeper sections of the USAT Liberty wreck in Tulamben are better saved for experienced adult divers. That said, Nusa Penida does offer snorkeling at Manta Point, which can be an extraordinary experience for the whole family even without scuba gear.

What to Look for in a Family-Friendly Dive Centre

When diving with children, the choice of dive centre matters even more than usual. Small group sizes, patient and qualified instruction, and a genuine safety culture make a significant difference to how comfortable younger participants feel in and out of the water. At Orana Dive Center, our maximum ratio of one guide to four guests means that younger or less experienced divers receive close, individual attention throughout every session. All water activities are led by certified PADI Instructors or Divemasters, and we provide high-quality ScubaPro gear in a range of sizes. We also include door-to-door transport, lunch, and refreshments, which removes a great deal of the logistical complexity that can make family travel stressful.

Before booking any activity for a child, it is worth having an honest conversation with your dive centre about the child's swimming ability, comfort in open water, and any health considerations. A good centre will always prioritise a child's confidence over simply completing a session, and will adjust or pause an activity if needed.

Combining Diving and Snorkeling on a Family Trip

One practical approach for mixed families is to split activities by ability. While certified adult divers explore the reef at depth, children or non-diving parents can join a snorkeling session at the same site. Many of Bali's best dive locations have excellent snorkeling directly above the dive area, meaning the family experiences the same reef from different vantage points and can share stories over lunch afterwards. This structure works particularly well at Padangbai and Amed, where the reef begins at the surface.

With thoughtful planning, a family dive trip in Bali can cater to every age and experience level.
